Recycled Chopstick Bowl

December 29th, 2005

ShopstickbowlWe were impressed to see how these humble bamboo implements have been transformed into a container of architectural simplicity. Even better, thanks to clever engineering, the bowl folds flat when it’s not needed. So when you go to your next dinner party, you can pull this nifty object out, open it up, and voilà–instant hostess gift. Then tell your curious audience how it’s made from chopsticks getting a second lease on life. Chaise Lounge

December 29th, 2005

ChaiseloungeNo doubt Mies van der Rohe would recognize this homage to his Barcelona daybed–the solid rectangular form, the tufted grid, and spare metal legs all appeal to the hard-edged modernist in us. But the snuggle-with-down-pillows part of us really appreciates this lounge’s substantial armrest and the plush 100% cotton fabric. And we feel good that the frame is made with FSC-certified wood and padded with natural latex. We think Mies would too. From greenerlifestyles.com.

Iannone and Sanderson coffee table

December 28th, 2005

IsdesignWhen we first saw this beautiful graphic coffee table, we couldn’t help but wonder what the material was, it was unlike anything we have seen in furniture recently. Well, now we know: it’s Kirei board, an environmentally friendly material made from reclaimed stalks of the Sorghum plant. Usually it is an agricultural waste product, but here the discarded stalks are bonded into a sheet with formaldehyde free adhesives - we love it. The rest of the table is matt white acrylic, that creates a wonderful bold graphic motif. Oh - almost forgot: designed is this wonderful table by the dynamic duo Iannone and Sanderson and if you don’t already love their work, pass by their website and be really amazed…

Luzifer Lamps!

December 27th, 2005

LuziferlampsWe have seen them many times in Europe, but unfortunately not as much as we’d like to over here: Luzifer lamps. From Valencia, Spain their immense talent has spread incredibly fast across Europe - and with designs like this it’s easy to understand why… Our favorite are Carambola (pictured here) and Saturnia, which has it’s way of working itself into your subcontious. Saturnia might resemble an unidentified flying Object, yet it leaves you with a feeling of calm through the warm light that has livened up homes and offices all over Europe.

Bearskin Rug

December 26th, 2005

Eeelko Moorer’s bearskin rug has been around for a while now, but it hasn’t lost any of it’s appeal since it first came out. And in case you are looking to replace the old worn out rug in front of the fireplace, here’s a high end alternative. Each ‘rug’ is hand cast by the artist upon order - so every one is unique - and they come in a multitude of colors: white, black, brown and pink of course. If you intend to hang it on your wall, make sure you have some solid anchors, at 150 pounds it’s definitely not a lightweight.

Heath Ceramics does Mid-Century Modern

December 23rd, 2005

Heath Ceramics has been around since the 1940’s, and all that experience has paid off. They have a wonderful line of both tableware and tiles, of particular interest though are their shaped tiles. They have actually been making these beautiful pieces since the 50’s and 60’s, but it was not until modern design recently started becoming popular that they have offered them in production quantities. There are several different colors and patterns available, all of which are full of that wonderful mid-century modern look from which they have their roots. It is refreshing to see a company that has held to its mid-century design for so long finally coming back into the spotlight again.

Bunaco

December 22nd, 2005

Bunaco Img Bunaco Project2Sometimes when you are looking for good floor lamps you get overwhelmed by the number of pieces made of metal. Sure some nice chrome lines are great, but there comes a certain point where something a little warmer just hits the spot. Thats why we were delighted to find this piece by Ubushina. Made from two separate bunaco trumpets connected together, this lamp gives off a nice warm light, and is visually much softer than chrome. Marie just loves anything made from bunaco, since it is so much more environmentally friendly. In case you don’t know about bunaco, it is a technique widely used in Japan for making bowls and baskets where a thin wood is veneered down into thin strips about 1″ wide. Those strips can then be wrapped around to make the desired shape. The benefit is that it uses much less wood to make a bowl shape, and thus is better for the environment. If you still don’t quite get it, check out the pictures after the jump.

Good rugs are hard to find these days, especially for those that are looking for something a little different from the crowd. KÄPY is a rug straight from Finland that fits the bill just perfect. Designed by Elina Helenius for Finnish design manufacturer Doctor Design, the KÄPY rug heavily draws inspiration from the Finnish forests and features a nice large floral print on the front. The colors are muted and soothing, and reinforce the natural look of the piece. It is made of jacquard woven cotton chenille, and wears wonderfully no matter where you choose to put it. Looking for a place to get it? Check out the Finnish Design Shop for this piece and lot of other great Finnish design.
