Reopening of Vitra Design Museum Berlin in Fall 2006

January 30th, 2006

VdmberlinThe location where Vitra Design Museum Berlin will be reopening in fall 2006 is the former Pfefferberg brewery complex. The various buildings of the Pfefferberg ensemble were constructed starting in 1841 and number among the most important monuments of Berlin industrial architecture from the 19th century. After serving as a brewery until around 1920, the Pfefferberg complex was subsequently home to a chocolate factory, a printing plant and small-scale trade operations. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Pfefferberg developed into a cultural centre encompassing clubs, exhibition spaces, theatre stages and a beer garden. While the Pfefferberg buildings were used in their previous state up through 2005, with many sections in need of renovation, they are now being subjected to successive phases of renovation over the following years and in some cases being adapted for new uses. The overall concept for the new uses of Pfefferberg was developed together with Vitra Design Museum Berlin, one of the main engines behind the redesign of Pfefferberg. With the support of funds from the Deutsche Klassenlotterie Foundation, the museum will establish exhibition spaces in one of the existing buildings and structurally expand by building a new addition.

Joe Colombo – Inventing the Future

January 27th, 2006

ColomboVitra Design Museum, 21 January 2006 – 10 September 2006

Televisions that retract into the ceiling, pivoting walls with a built-in mini-bar, underground ‘nuclear cities’ – the works of Italian designer Joe Colombo could have emerged from the set of a contemporary James Bond film. They exude the spirit of the shrill Sixties yet also impress with their functionality and striking forms. One of the most successful designers of his time, Colombo produced design classics such as the “Elda” armchair, the “Universale” chair or the lamp “Alogena”. In 1971, Joe Colombo died at 41 years of age. The exhibition “Joe Colombo – Inventing the Future” is the first international retrospective dedicated to Colombo’s work.

Cologne Furniture Fair Update 13: Desalto and Arik Levy A1

January 24th, 2006

DesaltoDesalto is always a good bet for beautiful innovations in our living room. This time they paired up with Arik Levy to create this absolutely gorgeous A1 chair. For the purists out there, it comes in all black as well, but it really shines in the 2 color version, whether in green or in the orange/brown version… it’s sleek puristic shapes and details, it’s slender, almost too thin feet, and the the structure of the fabric create a stunning example of modern interior design. Whilst it might look uncomfortable, it is incredibly comfortable and allows a lot of freedom for movement in all directions. We are so excited to see what they will present in Milan…

Cologne Furniture Fair Update 12: Bonaldo

January 24th, 2006

Bonaldo2Bonaldo presented Karim Rashid’s Dragonfly armchair and the unique folding table flap at last years Salone del Mobile, so we were eager to see what they had this year, and to our surprise they had a series of beautiful pillows with very bold flower prints that we really liked but would have not expected from Bonaldo in this way… Next to the pillows the clothes rack ‘Tree’ caught our eye as well, a quirky little reinterpretation of a classic that will put a smile on your face, or that of your visitors… Fur the innovative news though we were told to wait for Milano once again. We will be there and report for you… More images after the jump.

Cologne Furniture Fair Update 11: MVS Lounge Chair

January 23rd, 2006

MvsWe love lounge chairs. In any shape and color, they have become the center piece of our living room, and now that we experienced the zero gravity seating experience, we have to sell the one’s we have on ebay, making room for MVS’s brand new lounge chair. Marten Van Severen designed this architectural beauty for Durlet in Belgium basing it on the latest research Nasa has developed on the ‘Zero Gravity Position’, allowing us to sit in an almost weightless state. It is an extremely comfortable experience, even-though the puristic look of it makes us think the exact opposite. The small table that is positioned off the side is the ultimate detail, where else would we put our cocktail?
