Designer Emulation Kit 2: Mini Arco

April 28th, 2006

Dek2.2We brought you the DEK 1 a while back, and now Mark McKenna’s Designer Emulation Kit 2 is ready and we bring it to you just before the official launch. The Designer Emulation Kit 2 is based on the classic Arco by Achille Castiglioni, the ubiquitous symbol of good taste.

Since we are great devotees of classic interior design and love our classic furniture and accessories, you can imagine how delighted we were to come across Mark McKenna’s Designer Emulation Kits (DEK) from designers that created some of our favorite lighting fixtures.

Similar to the miniature chairs from Vitra, Mark’s DEK’s are meant to pay tribute to great modern designers of our time. Take one of these small, do-it-yourself contraptions (a computerized circuit board, to be precise), snap off its template, assemble and just plug it into a nine-volt battery (not included). Voila! A simple path to gorgeous light!

What was in the box: One DEK 2 (batteries not included)
Price: $25 / 20€

String of Pearls

April 26th, 2006

Ks Perle 1We know a good contraption when we see one, and this is a really nice idea by Konstantin Slawinski:

A string of white porcelain pearls, designed to protect any table, by keeping hot pots, pans or plates a good inch and a half away from the table top or tray surface. The beauty though lies in the flexibility: Do you have a small pot? No problem, just create 2 circles and all is good. A big dutch oven? No problem, one big oval solves it. 2 pots? Well, just create an eight and you’re done… So pretty nifty in our opinion.

And if you are looking for a really really big necklace, you could, well – ok, maybe not…

What was in the box: 1 string of 28 porcelain pearls about 36 inches long and an inch and a half high
Price: $60 / 49€

Normann Dustblade & Broom

April 24th, 2006

NormanndusterblackThe good guys at Normann are continously churning out beautiful everyday products – and we are huge fans of them…

One of their earliest products, was their reduced to the max dustpan and broom that was designed by Ole Jensen and was awarded the prestiguous Formlandprisen. Here’s the story to the simplistic product: Ole Jensen was irritated by all the dust and clay that was in his workshop one day, took his erasing brush and a piece of newspaper and swept everything together in on easy motion. He liked the idea of a hand held dust blade so much, that he turned it into a product. The dustpan is made out of polypropylene allowing it to be bent and flexed with a lot of flexibility and the broom out of specially treated beech wood and natural bristles – unlike modern bristles, which are usually inserted from the back of a brush, these bristles are bent around a rod and glued into a wedge in the handle. This traditional technique creates an extremely durable brush and passes through eight pairs of hands in the production process – the epitome of traditional craftsmanship and industrial production.

The hole in the back of the pan allows it to be stored on the handle and hung when not in use.

This beautiful contraption comes in light grey, dark grey and black

What was in the box: 1 dustblade and broom
Price: $25 / 20€

Michael Young PXR 5 EL

April 21st, 2006

Pxr5NewblackBy now you should all know that we are huge fans of Michael Young’s PXR5 watch and that still hasn’t changed. Especially after we met Michael in Milan just a few days ago and he gave us his little beauty, and pointed us to a very subtle feature which makes his watch simply irresistible. Light! It is finally available with a light.

You don’t need to be a watch aficionado to appreciate the classic yet modern design of Michael Young’s PXR 5. This is one of the most stylish digital watches we’ve seen in a long time.

We have the traditional elegant finishes: Stainless Brushed, Stainless Polished but we have a few new bracelet colors, namely Slate Grey and Scottish Green in addition to the existing Charcoal Black, Midnight Blue, Sand, Chocolate, Hot Pink and Bone China .

The functions remain the same and are simple, clear and to the point: time and date on a dark background with light type. And when the light button is pressed, it glows with beautiful blue light. The bracelet is almost an inch wide and can be adjusted to a minimum length of 6.5″ or a maximum of 8.25″.

And here’s the best feature: The price remains !

This watch will replace the standard version that is available now and is not available anywhere else yet…
